Plus size bra guide: sizing, fit and styles for larger bands and cups

No standard defines plus size in bras. Elomi's size guide runs from a 32 band and B cup to a 48 band and O cup in US letters, and its chart continues to UK KK. Freya's chart runs to a 44 band and UK K, and Marks & Spencer's list to 46K. We treat a band of 40 or more and a cup of DD or more as the points where sizing needs more care, because that is where the older methods fail and the country labels split (both shown below).

The tables are generated by the same engine as the calculator, so they cannot disagree with it. Cup letters are one inch of difference each, on whatever band you wear: a 48G and a 40G share a letter and nothing else, which is why sister sizes matter more as the band grows.

1. Centre front. Where the cups join it should sit flat and firmly against the chest bone, not dig in.
2. Underband. Firm and level with the underwire. If it rides up at the back the band is too big. You should fit two fingers under it but not be able to pull it more than two inches from your body; if it digs in, loosen it or go up a band.
3. Cups. They should fully enclose the bust with no overspill or gaping at the top or sides. Spilling means a bigger cup; loose fabric means a smaller one.
4. Straps. Firm and comfortable on the shoulders. More than two fingers under a strap means it is too loose; a strap that digs in or leaves a mark needs loosening.
5. Underwire. Comfortable under the bust and flat against the chest. If it sits away from the chest or digs in at the sides, the cups are too small.

Wacoal adds a sixth check for a fuller bust: the sides of your breasts should not extend beyond your body's frame, and it suggests looking for bra types with "slings" for more side support (Wacoal America, "5 Points of Fit", opened 29 September 2026). What size counts as plus size in a bra?

No standard sets it. Shops use "plus size" for their extended ranges, and the ranges start in different places. This page treats two things as the point where sizing needs more care: a band of 40 or more, and a cup of DD or more.

How do I find my size if my underbust is over 40 inches?

The same way as at any size: snug underbust to the nearest even inch is the band, and each inch of difference between bust and band is one cup letter. Avoid calculators that add 4 or 5 inches to the band: for the same tape they return a wider band and a smaller cup, as the table above shows. Our calculator works up to a 56 band and a UK K cup.

Does sister sizing work at larger sizes?

The arithmetic is the same at every size: down two inches on the band and up one cup letter keeps the cup volume. What changes is availability. A brand's range can end before the sister does, so check the size against the brand's own chart before you order.

Do I need a professional fitting?

Wikipedia reports that bra experts recommend professional fittings, especially for cup sizes D or larger. A tape measurement gives a good first size, not a fitting; the five checks above show whether a bra in that size is right.
